Apple's New Tablet - What Will iPad Cost and How Does it Work?

,
ANIMATION MODELING SOFTWARE :

Apple has finally done it. Apple has released its new tablet device, that is. The Mac public was expecting, indeed clamoring -- for Apple to release such a device -- and soon! For Apple to have failed to do so would have been a major letdown (to its customers as well as its stockholders). The momentum was just impossible to resist.

After all, the iPhone is essentially a miniature tablet computer. Apple has shown that it can "do" such a device like no one else. So, despite Steve Jobs past protestations, releasing a new tablet was a no-brainer. All Apple had to do is scale up its brilliant interface to a larger device.

Did I say "all Apple had to do?" The technical challenges in producing this new device, called the iPad, were enormous. Apple had to essentially design a whole new operating system that is not quite the Mac and not quite the iPhone, rewrite its core applications from scratch, and basically rethink the entire way a computer operates.

Apple was not the first to release a new tablet computer, just as it was not the first to release an MP3 player or cell phone, but it may well be the company that succeeds in making the tablet computer truly "catch fire" with the public.

Apple has a tremendous head start with 140,000+ apps for the iPhone, and it wisely designed the iPad to take advantage of them. The iPad can run iPhone apps at their original size, or in "pixel doubled mode" twice the size as on the iPhone, so that they nearly fill the iPad screen. Developers can easily rewrite their iPhone apps specifically for the iPad in such a way as to take advantage of its new features.

How will the iPad affect Internet marketers? Of course, the "i" in its name stands for Internet (and it's also a clever play on the name of the "iPod"). Surfing the web will be a joy, and a larger screen will give users much more room to work with. Apple's developers brag that it's like "holding the entire Internet in your hand," or like reading a physical book or magazine.

Creation of new apps for the iPad by developers could rival the gold rush that sprang up around the iPhone. Apple offers the SDK 3.2 beta for developers with the tools they need to start creating applications for the iPad, and an iPad simulator that lets them build and run applications on the Mac, lay out the user interface, test memory usage and debug.

Web graphic designers and artists will enjoy the included Brushes application on the iPad's larger screen, although some may feel that it is something like fingerpainting -- a stylus that works with the iPad will not be supported, at least not initially.

Apple has completely rewritten its productivity software iWork for the iPad. Keynote contains custom graph styles, custom-designed themes, animations and effects, and brand-new features designed just for the iPad. Pages includes Apple-designed templates and formatting tools. Numbers offers over 250 formulas, flexible tables and sophisticated charts.

Want to catch up on your marketing reading? Apple has worked hard to make reading e-books, magazines and newspapers pleasurable on the iPad. Apple's e-book reading software has an interface that looks like a bookshelf. Flip the bookshelf over with your finger, and you're brought to the online store where you can purchase new books.

The iPad's built-in Safari browser works just like the one on your Mac. And, like the version on your iPhone, you can scroll through pages by flicking your finger across them, or pinch or double tap to zoom in on a photo.

The Mail application offers a landscape view with a split screen showing both the current e-mail and the unread messages in your inbox. Want to view the current e-mail message by itself? Simply turn the iPad to portrait mode and the message zooms to fill the screen. The iPad will work with popular e-mail providers such as mobile me, Yahoo Mail, Gmail, Hotmail and AOL. To compose a message, you just tap and start typing.

This brings us to the onscreen keyboard. Many pundits wondered how text entry would work on Apple's new tablet device. You can use an external keyboard for typing long documents if you wish. However, I think Apple made the right decision in not attempting to build a physical keyboard into the tablet. The goal of the iPad is to bring your data and web surfing up close for an intimate feel. A keypad would simply get between you and the screen.

The on-screen keyboard is much larger, of course, than what is possible on the iPhone. In landscape mode, the keyboard is almost as large as that on a standard laptop. With just a few tweaks to the word recognition and auto-correction features of the iPhone software, typing on this virtual keyboard, I suspect, could be almost as fast as using a real one. Plus, I believe that voice dictation apps could come quickly to the iPad, just as they have to the iPhone.

And, of course, the iPad includes all of the same features as the iPhone, only in a larger form--video, YouTube, the iPod and iTunes, interactive satellite maps, the notepad, a calendar completely redesigned from the ground up for the iPad, Contacts and Spotlight search.

The iPad will be shipped in three different internal storage configurations and with the option of Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + 3G, for a total of six different models. The base model, the 16 GB Wi-Fi only, will start at a reasonable 9, while the top of the line 64 GB Wi-Fi + 3G model will tip the scales at a still affordable 9. Apple has said that, while most new technologies are introduced at a higher price point and slowly work their way down, Apple wanted to do things differently.

When will the iPad be available? Apple expects the Wi-Fi models to ship in late March and the 3G models to ship in April.

The thinness, just 0.5 inches, the light weight, just 1.5 pounds, and the flexibility of this new device are sure to make the iPad popular with Internet marketers and anyone on the go. With its high resolution LED backlight, it's larger display, it's responsive multi-touch screen and its powerful Apple-designed processor, the new iPad will be thin and light enough to take anywhere. And I suspect that many people will choose to do exactly that.

What is 3D Animation?

,
ANIMATION MODELING SOFTWARE :

Do not be fooled by the seemingly simplicity of this question.

I was actually quite tempted not to write this article because it's such a difficult topic to write on. It can be answered as complicated as you want it to be or as short as you desire. The thing is, I need to let clients know how complicated the process is, but not to let them walk away confused. Saying that, I will try my best to answer this question in the most concise but uncomplicated way possible.

In a nutshell, computer 3D animation refers to the work of creating moving pictures in a digital environment that is three-dimensional. Through the careful manipulation of objects (3D models) within the 3D software, we can then export picture sequences which will give the illusion of movement (animation) based on how we manipulate the objects.

What happens in animation is that motion is simulated in a way that the eyes tend to believe that actual motion has taken place while the fact is the perceived sense of motion is only because of the consecutive images that are passed through very fast.

This theory is inherent be it for 3D, 2D or stop motion animation.

In traditional 2D animation, pictures are hand-drawn and every one showing subtle changes from the previous. When played back sequentially, it creates the illusion of motion. In stop motion animation, real life models are moved slightly and filmed. Again, the pictures will create the illusion of motion when played back. In 3D animation, everything is done within the computer and exported from the computer.

The process of creating 3D animation can be sequentially divided into three phases: modeling - which describes the process of creating the 3D objects within a scene, layout and animation - which describes how objects are positioned and animated within a scene, and rendering - which describes the final output of the completed computer graphics. Through the combination of the above phases and a few other sub-phases, this completes the process of a 3D animation production.

There are many software in the market for creating 3D animation, ranging from the cheaper lower-end ones to the professional high-end versions. If you are curious to see how a 3D software works, you can download a free one called Blender. Just Google it and you will be able to find its official website.

This article was written by Aldric Chang - a creative businessman who is active in music composing and production, internet marketing, casual games production, animation production, cartoon production and character licensing. His 3d animation studio - Mediafreaks - is focused on producing high-end animation work for documentary producers, advertising houses and cartoon animated series - with projects ranging from the animation of dinosaurs to the visualization of natural disasters and something as chic as 3d jewelry animations or as intricate as 3d medical animation.

The Art of 3D Animation - Is It For You?

,
ANIMATION MODELING SOFTWARE :

The art of 3D animation is a relatively new art medium compared to other forms of animation. Art dates back to the age of the caveman and for as long as man has roamed the Earth, there has always been the artist and the critic. For me animation dates back to sometime in the 1980's when I used to watch Saturday morning cartoons and make flip books. However, 3D animation is an art form associated more with the information age and the growth of computer technology. Advances in technology have created what is now far more advanced than Saturday morning cartoons.

3D animation art challenges the intellectual artist. The artist now must be creative in how he or she uses traditional methods in conjunction with newer technology. To study this art form, the student must develop an understanding of all the elements needed to produce a computer animation. The animator must be able to take a concept from its infancy through maturation with the end result being a finished production displayed to an audience.

The 3D animation art student should be able to conceptualize taking an inanimate object and bringing it to life through character modeling. Once the object has been created or chosen, the animator needs to create a sequence of detailed views of the model in sketches on storyboards. Software suites can play a major role in this process providing tools that can create bring clarity to the storyline while providing time saving guidance during the planning stages.

The technique used in acquiring old school 3D animation involves is the creation of a set designing, the character (sometimes made of clay or other inanimate objects), a camera, and audio equipment. With today's newer technology, creation of art of 3D animation involves 3D modeling and character animation which can be done entirely on a computer. No filming is required as the character and each movement can be created with software.

3D animators need to understand that the art of 3D animation can be excessive for the viewer if the professional cannot define the viewer's line of equilibrium. To clarify this, think back to the last time you were just the right distance from a chain link fence. Did the fence appear toward and away from you when you looked at it long enough. The same sensation can occur if the viewer's senses are overwhelmed. When it comes to 3D animation less really is sometimes more. The art of 3D animation has the capability to simplify the most complex ideas that would require creative genius.

This insight is but a tip of the iceberg! I know, I have buried my face in many a book or computer screen. There are literally millions of publications about art and animation. Far more titles than can be listed here. Don't consider it a daunting task that sucks the fun out of animation. Knowledge is power and to be successful in any endeavor, you must have some background information.

So, if you think you are up to it, here is more recommended reading for anyone who thinks they have what it takes to pursue studies in The Art of 3D Animation.

Utilizing Random Access Memory Efficiently For Faster Render Times

,
ANIMATION MODELING SOFTWARE :

Random access memory (RAM) is the hardware component in your computer that programs use to store temporary information that they will need to refer back to throughout their regular use. It comes in different speeds, configurations and storage capacities.

Regardless of which 3D software package you use, making efficient use of random access memory could potentially increase the speed and quality of your renders, particularly if you are using all of your RAM during the use of your software. Although running out of RAM will be most noticeable during the rendering process, establishing an efficient workflow begins at the very start of the project with camera setup.

Lock in a Camera Viewpoint Before Beginning the Modeling Process

Camera setup is the first stage of any visualization. It is important to remember that there is no need to model, in any great detail, areas that cannot be seen by the camera, which is why the viewpoint must be decided upon before beginning the modeling process. If you imagine an architectural visualization as an example, the rear of the building being modeled will, in any professional studio, be modeled as quickly and with as little detail as possible in order to reduce load on resources (fewer polygons, vertices - vertex counts effect file size - and potentially texture maps). The impact on direct and indirect lighting needs to be considered.

Polygon Count

The number of polygons in your scene effect the amount of RAM being used during render time as well as throughout the modeling process. Make use of your software package's statistics function. Set it up to show the polygon count of both the entire scene as well as the current selection. This will keep polygon counts in the forefront of all decisions that you make when modeling. Consider how far an object is from the camera and optimize your objects accordingly. This is not to say that all objects should be made up of very few polygons. Objects close to the camera will need to be modeled in finer detail. It is important to keep this in mind in order to make best use of your time and your computer's RAM.

Texture Maps

Texture maps can be RAM hungry little monsters if not optimized appropriately. If your final animation is going to be rendered out at a resolution of 1024x576 pixels then you would reduce the size of all maps according to how large they appear in the animation. If, for example, a particular map covers one quarter of the frame during its largest point in the animation, then that map will not need to be any larger than 512x288 pixels. Although this sounds like half the size of the animation frame, it is actually one quarter because the image has reduced by half its height as well as half its width. Be sure to keep all of your full size maps because you are likely to need them later on down the track.

Modifiers

Modifiers also use up RAM so make sure that you delete any unneeded modifiers and collapse any modifiers that you will not need to adjust. It is good practice to save an iteration of your scene before collapsing modifiers so that you can always go back and make adjustments to parameters if you need to.

Restart Your Computer

Before rendering large scenes always restart your computer to refresh the RAM.

Close all Other Software

Even smaller programs use up certain amounts of RAM so make sure that all unnecessary programs are closed before hitting that render button.

The Visual Frame Buffer Window

The visual frame buffer window (VFB) is where you can see all the magic unfolding. It's the window that shows the rendering process in action. Every 3D artist will reluctantly admit that they've spent countless hours throughout their career watching buckets make pretty pictures in the visual frame buffer window. The VFB uses RAM so if you're running low on RAM and you don't need to see the VFB then disable it in the render settings.

Render Buckets

Render buckets are the brackets that you see bouncing around in the VFB. There is usually one bucket per core or thread involved in the rendering of that particular frame. For example, a quad core processor will show four buckets at render time. The size of the render buckets can be changed in most 3D software packages. If you are in dire need for a little bit of extra RAM consider reducing the size of the buckets slightly. Each bucket stores all of the information that it can 'see' at any one moment into RAM. Larger buckets can 'see' more than smaller buckets at any given moment so by reducing the size of the buckets you will reduce the amount of information that is stored in RAM. Be aware though that this will increase the render time.

64bit Operating Systems

The next time you upgrade to a new computer consider the 64bit version of your operating system. 32bit operating systems are limited to the use of approximately 2-3Gb of RAM whereas 64bit operating systems are limited only by your budget. A little bit of extra RAM goes a long way. The downside to 64bit operating systems is that although some 32bit software (check with the software manufacturer) will work with a 64bit operating system they will not be able to make use of the extra RAM. This means that in order for you to make the most of the extra RAM the software that you use will also need to be 64bit. Ensure that all software and plugins that you use come in 64bit versions or at the very least have 32bit versions that are compatible with a 64bit operating system. 64bit software is gradually becoming increasingly more available.

Incorporating these practices into your daily work flow will hopefully make the process more fruitful and enjoyable. Happy rendering.

Getting Real With 3D Animation

,
ANIMATION MODELING SOFTWARE :

The 3D animation is the present day cutting edge graphical presentation that is accomplished through computer software and digital generators. This modern day graphical tool is now the norm in motion pictures, video presentation formats, animated films, commercial advertisements, virtual walk through and web presentations and stuffs. We are now witnessing 3D graphic animation in various forms which include 3D presentations, audio visual illustrations, 3D scientific and medical graphics and a lot of other day-to-day applications.

In order to understand the underlying principle behind 3D graphics and animation, it is important that we clearly know its basic distinction from the traditional 2D animation. The 3D graphic application has the representation of geometric variables which are contained in the computer in performing the calculations that will render the 2D generated graphics.

The rendered graphics in 2D format are used for the virtual and real time illustrations in 3D graphic illustrations. The 3D graphic illustrations show images at various angles including an aerial shoot to create a near perfect illustration that is almost real in every aspect. This feature is referred to as motion tracking, which provides the virtual representation of the actual camera motion tracking representing the actual camera motion shoot.

The 3D graphics comes from a basic idea or concept. The concept then evolves with the required details and elements of a design and flow of the graphics in the form of storyboards. The theme and character development comprise the preliminary work done by animators based on an established design and plan. The preparation of the storyboard allows for the generation of key frames to complete the flow of motion as shown in the storyboard.

The elements or characters in 3D graphic are referred to as 3D models. These are basically data files that carry the data that are needed to render 3D images. On the other, the process of key-framing in 3D graphics involves the assigning of appropriate values to the variables at the exact points in the motion flow of graphics in a series of frames to create the desired animated sequence.

You will require a texture map in order to manipulate the pattern or structure of the 3D models. This is the application that allows the graphic designer to control and alter the diffuse surface color at the most basic pixel level. This is achieved in texture mapping by generating bitmap images of 3D models within an existing 3D scene.

What are the basic skills required in 3D graphics and animation work? If you are involved in a 3D graphics and animation project, it is essential that you have the ability to focus on details and have the creativity in generating design schemes and characters.

A career in 3D graphics and animation is both exciting and challenging. It offers a lot of career opportunities and your advancement in this field is based on how you perform as a member of a bigger team. With its broad application for a wide range of concerns and interest, 3D graphics and animation is expected to be one of the most demanding and fulfilling jobs for a broad range of individuals and professionals.

Chuck R. Stewart recently researched some techniques used in motion picture 3D animation and 3D graphics animation that were very interesting.

There are plenty of PHP frameworks are available which save your time during coding and subsequently your money. CakePHP is the most popular framework among them. CakePHP is opensource development tool which minimizing the architectural headaches and employing many features from Ruby On Rails. Its star feature is MVC architecture i.e. Model, View and Controller.

This is a three part way of programming and designing your apps so that code does not interfere with design. This keeps code clean. It lets you leave all low level tasks it needed to do when building apps from scratch. There is a huge learning curves with this framework. This kind of architecture needs time getting used to plus all the conventions and rules that have to be adhered. CakePHP team provides online tutorials and every kind of guidance for the beginners to reach at the intermediate level.

Now, you know the facts about the CakePHP and simply understand that find the CakePHP developer is not an easy task. As per my opinion you should try it at outsourcing companies. The Making of Pixar's 'Cars' and Disney Cars Toys

,
ANIMATION MODELING SOFTWARE :

With a gross earning of over 0,000,000 worldwide, the 2006 animated film Cars by Pixar was 2006's highest animated grossing film in the US, losing only to Ice age: The Meltdown on the global scale. This revenue does not include income from the Disney cars toys industry.

Starting from the early stages of production the team in Pixar Studios started their research at the race tracks in Infineon Raceway ( Sonoma county), riding in race cars driven by expert drivers to feel how the cars move and react to speed and forces in the physics of the real world. They would also study traffic on the morning commute and went on a field trip along route 66 watching the small towns that were effected from the new highways and intersections that were built. The photos from this trips helped the modelers and environment designers build their scenes and unravel the story.

Animators studied the movements of athletes to see how they twist , turn and move and even took acting classes to get into the cars' shoes (or tires). Developers sketched multiple cars designs (from different time periods) following John Lesseter's guidelines which did a research of his own visiting the design studios of 3 major auto makers to see how the cars are designed. John wanted, for example, to have the cars eyes at the windshields instead of the headlights which made them look snake-like .An additional request was to use the tires as hands except vehicles with hooks that use them for pulling and towing. It is a continuing challenge to make they cars human like without losing their authenticity.

When the design phase was done, 3d models were sculptured in clay and when approved they would be scanned to 3d software. The same models were used later as reference for Disney cars toys.

The next phase before animating any sequence would be to make the car look realistic by applying textures, shadows, reflections and lighting.

Once the movie was released additional products were released such as Disney cars toys, dvds books, accessories and more that made cars one of the best selling animation feature even today, 3 years after release.

Currently (dated Aug 2009) pixar studios, which is located in Emeryville, California have earned twenty two academy awards, three Grammys and four golden globes for their achievements in the animated industry.

Discover The Difference Between 3D and 2D Animations

,
ANIMATION MODELING SOFTWARE :

A quick and speedy demonstration of a string of images of 2D or 3D artwork so as to create an illusion of motion can be understood as animation. The skill of building moving objects with the usage of computers is known as computer animation and is also sometimes referred to as computer-generated imagery or computer-generated imaging (CGI). A motion picture is one of the forms of presenting animation, as is also a video program and a number of other forms of presenting animation exist. The cartoons that one watches on television are also an example of animation. Animated objects can be turned and moved around just like real objects.

This article highlights some points of difference between 2D and 3D animation. For starters, 2D animation (hand drawn) happens on a 2 dimensional platform and hence, images are flat and only one angle can be seen. 3D animation (CGI) happens on a 3 dimensional platform and therefore images have depth and numerous perspectives similar to real life can be seen.

In general, 2D animation calls for drawing or movement on, say, a flat surface or in the horizontal and vertical (X and Y) planes respectively. On the other hand, 3D includes modeling, that is to say, creating images in 3-dimensions using computer software. 3D gives the image the 'Z' dimension and this third dimension permits rotation of the image.

Additionally, 2D and 3D animation can be differentiated by comparing them to a painting and a sculpture respectively. The difference can also be seen by understanding that since 3D animation offers a depth perspective, we can not only see a rectangle (2 dimensional figure) but also a cube, which is a 3 dimensional figure.

Also, there is a difference between 2D and 3D animation with reference to the usage of tools to build 2D and 3D images, the effort involved, the cost encountered and the quality of the final product. 2D animation is a hands-on course of action and requires hand-drawing hundreds to thousands of individual frames. These are then transferred to clear plastic cels, hand-painted, and then filmed in a series over a painted background image. The amount of time, labor, and tools involved in this entire process can be incredible. In contrast, in case of 3D computer animation, the need for many of the additional tools required to create an animation is minimized and also the time and effort involved is cut down to a great extent.

In a nut shell it can be said that basically 2D and 3D animations mean the dimension in which the animation is crafted and that 3D animation makes objects or images look more realistic when compared to 2D animation.

The advantages of 3D animation:
You might have wondered why we should go after the 3D animation, when the whole process itself takes a number of stages and appears to be very complex. Apart from the complexities involved, it does offer a lot of advantages. Once the modeling process is completed, the 3D software allows very flexible control over the scene and animation. You can rotate the model in any angle you want (unlike 2D). 3D animation software also gives a rich collection of tools that aid the process of modeling and animation. You can choose from a wide variety of modeling techniques based on your requirement. Lighting and camera setup is the exact replica of a real world movie shooting environment. Apart from all these, the ultra realism offered by the 3D rendered scenes makes 3D graphics the best solution for the emerging animation industry.

Pervasive Computing

,
ANIMATION MODELING SOFTWARE :

Pervasive computing is the trend towards increasingly ubiquitous (another name for the movement is ubiquitous computing), connected computing devices in the environment, a trend being brought about by a convergence of advanced electronic - and particularly, wireless - technologies and the Internet. Pervasive computing devices are not personal computers as we tend to think of them, but very tiny - even invisible - devices, either mobile or embedded in almost any type of object imaginable, including cars, tools, appliances, clothing and various consumer goods - all communicating through increasingly interconnected networks.

Modern devices that may serve the ubiquitous computing model include mobile phones, digital audio players, radio-frequency identification tags and interactive whiteboards. Other terms for ubiquitous computing include pervasive computing, calm technology, things that think, everyware, and more recently, pervasive Internet.

Ubiquitous computing encompasses a wide range of research topics, including distributed computing, mobile computing, sensor networks, human-computer interaction, and artificial intelligence.

HISTORY

Pervasive computing is the third wave of computing technologies to emerge since computers first appeared:

o First Wave - Mainframe computing era: one computer shared by many people, via

workstations.

o Second Wave - Personal computing era: one computer used by one person, requiring a

conscious interaction. Users largely bound to desktop.

o Third Wave - Pervasive (initially called ubiquitous) computing era: one person, many

computers. Millions of computers embedded in the environment, allowing technology

to recede into the background.

BACKGROUND

Eight billion embedded microprocessors are produced each year. This number is expected to rise dramatically over the next decade, making electronic devices ever more pervasive. These devices will range from a few millimeters in size (small sensors) to several meters (displays and surfaces). They may be interconnected via wired and wireless technologies into broader, more capable, networks. Pervasive computing systems and services may lead to a greater degree of user knowledge of, or control over, the surrounding environment, whether at home, or in an office or car. There have been calls for more widespread debate on the implications of pervasive computing while it is still at an early stage of development.

PERVASIVE COMPUTING TECHNOLOGIES

Pervasive computing technologies classified in to four converging areas

- Mobile Computing

- Embedded and Applied computing

- RFID and Sensors

- Mobile and sensor networking

Mobile Computing

The widespread use of mobile computing devices has changed the way people compute and vastly expanded research areas in distributed computing and networking. In fact, traditional distributed computing is actually a subset of the broad area of mobile computing. Many topics in "mature" areas like distributed databases, distributed fault tolerance, and resource management now require much additional study, because many traditional assumptions are challenged. Mobile computers operate in more hostile environments, are resource-constrained (limited power, frequent disconnection), and are peripheral-poor.

Mobile computing is changing the way we live and work, as profoundly as the introduction of the automobile did almost a century ago. Key advances in mobile networking, wireless connectivity, mobile information access, content adaptation, data synchronization, technology for notebook and wearable computers, and innovative mobile e-business solutions have come from worldwide research laboratories..

Some of the recent research in mobile computing includes:

WEARABLE DISPLAY OF ATHLETES' STATISTICS

TeamAwear is a basketball jersey that displays real-time information about its wearer's statistics such as their fouls, points, and scores and alerts players when the game is nearly over or when time is running out to shoot. Mitchell Page and Andrew Vande Moere at the Centre of Design Computing and Cognition of the University of Sydney developed the system, which consists of numerous colored electroluminescent panels. A small computer attached to the player's body controls the panels and communicates wirelessly with a server that tracks relevant game statistics. For example, panels on the jersey's side light up to show how many goals the wearer has scored, with each panel representing 10 goals Although the inventors developed the TeamAwear jersey originally for basketball, they claim that it could also work in other fast-paced sports in which player-specific data changes rapidly, such as soccer, volleyball, cricket, and baseball. It could also support emergency teams working in noisy environments where verbal communication is inefficient.

SKYSCOUT

If you've ever looked at the night sky and wondered what stars you were observing, Celestron's SkyScout might be for you. Especially useful for novice astronomers, this handheld device combines GPS technology with a map of the sky to identify, locate, and provide information about celestial bodies. To identify an object of interest, you simply view it through the SkyScout and press the Identify button. SkyScout's technology identifies the object and tells you what it is. To locate a celestial body, you select it from a reasonably easy-touse menu of objects and press the Locate button. SkyScout uses red directional arrows around the eyepiece to guide you to the object in the sky. A nice feature is that the menu shows only objects that should be visible. (Unfortunately, Sky- Scout has no way to know which of those objects are blocked by trees). Finally, the device can educate you about many of the more popular celestial bodies. The information is available both through audio and text and includes facts about the object and its history and mythology. SkyScout's release was delayed in 2006 because of manufacturing problems in one of the components.

NOKIA NSERIES PHONES

Nokia has announced three new mobile phones in its multimedia Nseries, each targeting a different market segment. The N71, N80, and N92 offer a long list of features. The N71, from the Nokia XpressMusic family, offers an FM stereo tuner, a five-band equalizer, and support for audio and video formats including MP3, AAC, eAAC+, WMA, JPEG, and MPEG-4. It offers a 240 _ 320-pixel display and two cameras, one 2-megapixel (1600 _ 1200 pixel) and the other VGA (640 _ 480 pixel). It operates on dual-mode wideband code division multiple access (WCDMA)/GSM and triband GSM. The N80 offers a 352 _ 416-pixel display and a 3-megapixel camera with features including four flash modes, 10 scene modes, manual exposure correction, and four color tones.

Embedded and Applied Computing

Embedded and ubiquitous computing is an exciting new paradigm that provides computing and communication services all the time and everywhere. Its systems are now affecting every aspect of our life to the point that they are hidden inside various appliances. This emergence is a natural outcome of research and technological advances in embedded systems. An Embedded Pervasive Computing Environment is equipped with hardware and software components that autonomously respond to the needs of its occupants. Embedded system is the core part of pervasive computing and it deals with various applications like wearable computer architecture and applications, sensor networks, real-time embedded operating systems, embedded servers, embedded system networking, address-free routing, smart spaces, dynamic service discovery, mobility and case studies. Some of the on-going researches in embedded systems include:

ROLLABLE DISPLAY

Who hasn't dreamt of a display that rolls up when not in use? Phillips took one step toward this dream on a commercial scale when it formed venture company Polymer Vision in January 2004. Polymer Vision recently reported that it can make a flexible display with a 2 cm bending radius. The display is an organics-based, QVGA (320 240 pixels) active-matrix display, 5 in. on the diagonal and 85 dpi. The display layers a 200-micron thick, reflective Electronic-Ink display from E Ink Corporation (www.eink.com) on top of a 25-micron thick, active-matrix plane.

USING LANDLINES FOR CELLULAR CALLS

Xcelis (www.xcelis.com) has developed an innovative product for coupling cell phones and landline handsets. The Pantheon (see Figure 3) plugs into a landline phone line and, using a Bluetooth connection, routes incoming and outgoing voice calls and data from users' cell phones to their landline handsets. The Pantheon indicates incoming mobile calls with a distinctive ring. While the mobile call is in progress, it doesn't tie up the landline, meaning you can still receive landline calls through your other telephones.
You need one device for each landline telephone that you want to multiplex. When making calls from your landline, you can choose whether to use your cell phone or landline account. The Pantheon provides additional features, including conferencing a landline call and a mobile call, accessing a user's mobile phonebook from a landline phone, and switching mid-call from a landline phone to a mobile phone. The Pantheon is also compatible with voice over IP handsets.

BIONIC ARM

Todd Kuiken at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine has developed a thought-powered bionic arm. The arm is based on a pioneering muscle reinnervation procedure that takes an amputee's nerves and connects them to a healthy muscle. Doctors take nerves that used to go to the arm and connect them to chest muscles. The nerves grow into the chest muscles and can contract the muscle when the patient thinks, for example, "Close hand." Electrical signals from the chest muscles drive the arm. Surface electrodes sense these impulses from the pectoral muscle and carry them through to the arm, causing it to move. Jesse Sullivan, a high-power lineman who had both of his arms amputated after being severely electrocuted, is the first patient to be outfitted with bionic arms. The arms have enabled him to do daily activities such as put on socks, shave, eat dinner, take out the garbage, carry groceries, and vacuum. Future generations of the arm will incorporate the sense of touch and feeling.

Mobile and Sensor networking

Sensor mobility allows better coverage in areas where events occur frequently in many sensor networks, considerably more units are available than necessary for simple coverage of the space. Augmenting sensor networks with motion can exploit this surplus to enhance sensing while also improving the network's lifetime and reliability. When a major incident such as a fire or chemical spill occurs, several sensors can cluster around that incident. This ensures good coverage of the event and provides immediate redundancy in case of failure another use of mobility comes about if the specific area of interest (within a larger area) is unknown during deployment. For example, if a network is deployed to monitor the migration of a herd of animals, the herd's exact path through an area will be unknown beforehand. But as the herd moves, the sensors could converge on it to get the maximum amount of data. In addition, the sensors could move such that they also maintain complete coverage of their environment while reacting to the events in that environment. In this way, at least one sensor still detects any events that occur in isolation, while several sensors more carefully observe dense clusters of events. On going researches in sensor networking includes:

WORLDWIDE BROADBAND WIRELESS ACCESS

Option is offering a PC data card that can access wireless broadband worldwide. You can use the GlobeTrotter GT Max on the 850, 1900, or 2100 MHz HSDPA/UMTS (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access/Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) networks and the 850, 900, 1800, or 1900 MHz EDGE/ GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) bands. The card can support data speeds up to 1.8 megabits per second on HSDPA networks, 384 kilobits per second on UMTS networks, 247 Kbps on EDGE networks, and 85 Kbps on GPRS networks. It's a Type II PCMCIA (Personal Computer Memory Card International Association)-compliant 3.3-V PC card and includes a novel "Butterfly" retractable antenna that doesn't require users to remove the card when it's not in use. Numerous wireless carriers offer the card, including Cingular, which recently announced that it would offer it under two plans. One plan will cost users 0 per month and includes unlimited data use in the US and 100 Mbytes of downloads in Canada and Mexico. The other plan will cost 0 and will include unlimited use in the US and 100 Mbytes of downloads in 24 countries including Australia, China, France, Italy, and Germany.

THE SELF-CLEANING HOUSE OF THE FUTURE

The house of the future won't need cleaning. Not by humans, leastways. Every surface will be dirt-repellent and antibacterial; and on the floors the vacuum cleaner is buzzing around - all on its own. The outer walls are all glass which can be screened off entirely and the interior surface used as TV screen. The scenario of the self-cleaning house belongs in the distant future, maybe 20 years from now. With the rapidly increasing development of nanotechnology we have seen for the past few years, it is not easy to predict a specific time span and it will be not only self-cleaning but also self-sufficient, energy wise. Today, the Australians are already experimenting with nanoglass-houses where the glass can be treated with a pigmented coating rendering the entire house non-transparent - the roof included.

WALL SENSORS

The house of the future will be capable of alerting its owner if it's in need of repair. The building materials will, of course, be susceptible to wear and tear due to wind and weather, and they will therefore have built-in sensors. When these sensors appear, the house computer will receive a message that this particular section needs repair. A variety of conditions are similarly monitored. This way, house owners can cheaply repair worn materials and avoid major, expensive repairs after the damage has been done.

THE INTELLIGENT HOUSE

The intelligent house of the future will alert the fire brigade in case of fire when you're at work. Or, if you've got a leaky water pipe, it will get hold of the plumber. Multifunctional sensors throughout the house will keep an eye on heating, lights, indoor climate etc. The house of the future will comprise two major digital gateways. One gateway will be the media server which comprises the complete collection of the family's music, films, photos etc. Another feature will be the highly secure homegateway - a server communicating with the many sensors distributed all over the house to monitor heating, indoor climate etc. The two gateways are separate entities, as the security on the homegateway needs to be exceedingly tight. This gateway should not be exposed to hacking, which could have fatal consequences with respect to security. If, for instance, the motion detectors are tampered with, the burglar alarm might be disabled. Likewise, it would be an unpleasant experience to come home to a room temperature of 40 degrees Celcisus, because someone is mad at you and has hacked into your system to change the temperature settings Thus, each room in the house of the future will be equipped with small sensors. - Larger rooms may have several. They will measure the physical conditions in the room and communicate with the homegateway which will then take care of the Internet-based communication out of the house.

RFID and Sensors

Radio frequency identification (RFID) technology uses radiofrequency waves to transfer data between readers and movable tagged objects without line of sight. RFID holds the promise of real-time identifying, locating, tracking and monitoring physical objects, and can be used for a wide range of pervasive computing applications. To achieve these goals, RFID data have to be collected, transformed and expressively modeled as their virtual counterparts in the virtual world. RFID data, however, have their own unique characteristics - including aggregation, location, temporal and history-oriented - which have to be fully considered and integrated into the data model. The diversity of RFID applications pose further challenges to a generalized framework for RFID data modeling. Today, Radio Frequency Identification enjoys an enormous interest as the first widely deployed pervasive technology as not only from the standpoint of research
but also from Corporate practices future. Some of the recent researches in RFID technologies include:

TAGS EVERYWHERE

The Ubiquitous ID Center provides the infrastructure for managing electronic tags embedded in or attached to objects in a ubiquitous environment. The center developed the ucode, a multicode tag that automatically identifies information stored in bar codes, RFID chips, smart cards, and electronic tags embedded in virtual entities such as software and electronic money. Comparable to the ISBN (International Standard Book Numbering) code used in the publishing industry, the UID Center assigns unique numbers to each tag and stores data relating to the object in database servers. The ucode tags use a 128-bit code that can be extended in 128-bit units, creating a virtually limitless string of numbers. To navigate this tagged environment, the UID Center developed the Ubiquitous Communicator, a PDA-like device that reads ucode tags and retrieves the relevant data from the UID Center's server database. The standard UC has a host of features, including wireless LAN, Voice over Internet Protocol, infrared data communication, and a biometric reader. Apart from the PDA-like version, the UID Center developed a cell phone model and a watch style. At home, it will serve as the remote control for home entertainment systems and appliances. In the office, it will read a printer's tag and order a replacement cartridge as needed

FROM UPC TO RFID

Smart packaging became a possibility with the introduction of small battery-free microprocessors called RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device) tags. Though these have been commercially available for a number of years, they have been too clunky and too expensive for use in packaging. This situation is changing rapidly: industry experts predict that the price per tag will fall to under 10 cents each in the course of five years or so. The new generation of RFID tags can take the form of a sticker like the classic bar codes, or they can be directly integrated into the packaging material itself. They consist of a silicon microprocessor and some form of radio antenna--conductive carbon ink is replacing the more expensive metal coil of earlier tag types. This radio antenna functions as both input/output channel and power source. Electricity is generated in the antenna by either a magnetic field or a radio signal; the tag responds by sending out a radio signal in turn. This reply signal contains metadata stored on the chip, typically an ID number .With the help of RFID readers--in our cell phones, in supermarket freezers and check-outs, in our private fridges--we will be able to retrieve information about a particular item based on its ID number. In fact, the first cell phones with built-in readers, based on NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, are already on the market.

NEXT-GENERATION TAGS

The smart tags which will soon begin replacing bar codes in our supermarkets are actually pretty dumb: their only ability is reciting their ID code on command. With the next generation of MEMS tags, the epithet 'smart' will be more fitting. MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) tags are able to perform measurements and calculations. MEMS tags are especially interesting in connection with extremely perishable goods like milk and meat. Studies have shown that the 'sell by' date on such products is dubious at best: milk only stays fresh until the given date as long as it is stored at the right temperature. Storage is the key term here; for example, that the temperature in around one-fifth of the meat and dairy cases in American supermarkets is three or four degrees too high. And what happens when we leave the milk out on the kitchen counter all morning? MEMS tags in smart packages will be able to take the milk's temperature every fifteen minutes. The measurements are then sent to a small microprocessor which calculates the milk's estimated freshness.

FOOD SAFETY

The fridge of the future will have a door with a built-in scanner for reading the digital tags on food packages. This way the refrigerator will always keep abreast of what is put into it; and the screen on the door can supply an overview of what's behind the door. By scanning all foodstuffs, you will always have an updated listing of your current supplies - canned and frozen food included. In other words: the refrigerator comes to play the part of digital administrator of the kitchen. Should you e.g. keep food approaching its expiry date, the fridge will alert you. The product can then be used at once, and you avoid having to throw away food. The screen is connected to the Internet, and each and every chip tagged to the packaging will represent a Web site which can be visited by the fridge as the food products are stowed away. Thus it can check for any warnings issued for this particular product. We all remember instances of contaminated food which, undetected by producers, have ended up in supermarkets and, consequently, household fridge or freezer. In such cases, an alert from the refrigerator could reduce the risks considerably. Since the fridge frequently runs automatic checks on the net, users are no longer dependent on radio and TV alerts.
